iPhone 8 will reportedly keep Lightning but switch to USB Type-C standard

Contrary to ongoing reports , KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone 8 will keep Lightning but switch to USB Type-C standard for power delivery. The iPhone 8 was said to ditch Lightning and instead ship with USB Type-C for charging, data syncing and probably audio out as well.

"All three new iPhones launching in 2H17 will support fast charging by the adoption of Type-C Power Delivery technology (while still retaining the Lightning port)," according to the analyst.

Moreover, in a bid to ensure "product safety and stable data transmission" during a fast charge, "Apple will adopt TI's power management and Cypress's Power Delivery chip solutions for the new iPhone models."

To recall, Apple introduced Lightning in 2012 after having stuck with the retro 30-pin dock connector since the company's iPod days.

"Apple would introduce (other) updates including a USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company's original Lightning connector," according to a WSJ report. The same report also added that the next iPhone "would also do away with a physical home button."

Apple is reportedly working on as many as three different iPhone models this year. Two of them are said to be standard offerings on the lines of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus while the third version will reportedly be a special anniversary edition iPhone with a dramatically different design and top-tier specs. The iPhone 8 is said to come with an all-glass body and a flexible OLED screen (without home button) with a functional area with backlit keys for navigation.

Ming-Chi Kuo also notes that "the OLED version (of the next iPhone) may have a faster charging speed thanks to a 2-cell L shaped battery pack design."
